Sculpture of Teacher Counsellor and Student

Location : Foyer of La Salle Primary School
Sculptor :Brother Joseph McNally FSC

This is one of the best beloved sculptures of Bother Joseph and very suitable for a school or educational environment. It was originally carved from bog oak.

The teacher counsellor is slightly bent, to listen carefully or to give advice. The young student appears slightly casual but taking it all in at the same time.

The figure of the teacher resembles that of a La Salle Bother in keeping with Brother Joseph's vocation. There is the suggestion of a robe, rabat and folded hands.

I have a feeling that the artist liked the attitude of the student partly overawed, partly offhand, but questioning and thoughtful.

Brother Joseph was a renowned sculptor and educator and is especially well known in Ireland, Singapore, Australia and the U.S.A. He died on 27th August 2002.
