31 March 2010

Easter Greetings: Holy Thursday marks the beginning of the Sacred Triduum as we celebrate the passion, death and Resurrection of Jesus. May this be a time of blessing for our Lasallian family in the Region.

Visit of Bro Superior: Bro Alvaro arrived back in Rome Sunday morning after a very memorable visit to seven countries in PARC. The Institute website and various bulletins I sent kept you informed. My thanks to Brothers Francis Chaochaiyapat, Edmundo Fernandez, Collin Wee, Gregoire Tan, John Baptist Hiep, Thomas Lavin, Antony Rogers, Patrick Tierney and their collaborators who planned and organized the visit in each sector.

Welcome to PARC: Bro Thomas Johnson, Vicar General will be in the Delegation of India, mainly to attend an Assembly of the Brothers on 18 April. Bro Charles Kitson, Institute Secretary for the Lasallian Family and Association is currently visiting Papua New Guinea, Australia and Malaysia. He will be joined in Malaysia by Bro Jorge Fonseca, Institute Secretary for the Lasallian Educational Mission. Unfortunately Bro Jorge had visa difficulties which prevented his accompanying Bro Charles for the whole visit. This is the first time that both have been in PARC.

Lasallian Alumni Convention: The Malaysia Federation of Lasallian Alumni organized a Convention in Malacca where Bro Superior was the keynote speaker. In a first for the Region, invited alumni from Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Australia attended in addition to the delegates from all over Malaysia. An Ad Hoc committee representing each sector was formed to plan for the international UMAEL convention in Manila next year.

Constitutive Assembly LEAD: The Councils of each of the sectors that will constitute LEAD will meet in Manila after Easter to discuss those statutes required to form the new District. These will then go to Bro Superior and the General Council for approval. Other items on the agenda include a visioning exercise and various scenarios involving LEAD as it evolves after 15 May 2011.

Mission to China: The Lasallian Education Council (Mission Council) of Hong Kong presented a paper to Bro Superior; “Opportunities for Education Services in Mainland China.” This was discussed at a meeting of the Council with Bro Superior. Bro David Liao was present also. Bro Alvaro commented that the mission to China is an Institute priority to be taken forward by both LEAD and PARC. I will send the paper to you.

Appointment Hong Kong: Bro Stephen Hogan of the District of ANZPNG has been appointed as Principal of La Salle College, Kowloon. He will take up the appointment in September.

District of Vietnam: The Socialist Republic of Vietnam has granted a Certificate of Registration for Religious Activities of De La Salle Institute delegated by “Religious Nguyen Van Tan” to nine establishments in three Provinces of the country. The document states very clearly that the aim is; “Educational Service of the Poor.” The Peoples’ Committee of the Province of Lam Dong has decided that “Nguyen Van Tan” may establish “The Private La Salle Vocational Center in DalatCity.” This is the centre tabled at PARC 33. Congratulations to Bro Gregoire.

Schedules: Vincent Keating is currently giving the Annual Retreat in the Delegation of Thailand and then will spend two months in Pakistan to work in the formation house replacing Bro Sajid who is preparing for Final Vows. Mark Murphy is on his way back to PARC from the USA. He will be in Thailand for meetings followed by the Assembly and other meetings in Manila. David will be in Thailand over Easter for the Delegation retreat, Council meeting and meetings with Mark and Vince. He will then attend the LEAD Constitutive assembly followed by an Assembly, Council meeting and Canonical Visit in India.

Best wishes and prayers during this Holy week and Easter.
